I remember when there was an active shooter threat on UChicago's campus. It genuinely feels like it comes out of nowhere, and suddenly, you're forced to deal with the aftermath of the incident. I'm so sorry and angry that this continues to happen.

Wow! This was a great read. I loved your points and I hated how accurate they were to where America is right now. Please take care of yourself!

Well an interesting (albeit biased) missive. First such incidents are a fail on many levels but unfortunately evil is part of the human condition. Yes mental illness is part of the problem but fails to account for the rise of such events since the late 1960s. Seems to me that we have a societal problem more than anything else. Since the late 1960s we’ve seen a degradation of society in which life has become cheap and morals have become relative. There is no right and wrong. Interestingly along with this we have seen increases in mental illness. Part of the increase is due to better diagnosis but I submit that there are other reasons… that all come back to the breakdown of the family. Now the sources that you site are “ehh” and do carry some weight but they only tell part of the story. They fail to recognize that there are genuinely bad people out there who will find a way to inflict harm. The gun is just the tool. I suggest you read “More guns less crime” to secure a balanced view of the topic. There is no combination of laws that will eradicate the problem. So what can be done? For society to go back to a system of morality that fosters solid family values and social relationships. These values are all found in all faith groups. Obviously what we have today isn’t working.
